International ORT Day took place on the 25th April 2018, connecting students, teachers and friends of ORT around the world through classroom link-ups, global competitions and much more.
ORT students in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Israel, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Panama, Russia, Spain and Ukraine joined together for several activities from school projects to competitions, see more below.
Using ORT resources including pictures and documents from the archive, twenty schools conducted a lesson about ORT’s history and learned about ORT’s mission to provide communities around the world with learning, skills and belonging from 1880 until today.
In the weeks leading up to International ORT Day nine schools began independent research projects about the history of their local ORT organisations. Students from Latin America, Israel, Europe, Russia and the Baltic states produced slides, videos and presentations that were in their schools and online. Students put a lot of time and effort into these projects and we are very proud to add their work to ORT’s archives.
We are pleased to announce the the following schools have been awarded the top prizes for their International ORT Day school projects.
1st place: Odessa ORT Zhabotinski school #94, Ukraine
Joint 2nd Place: Moscow School #1311 “Tekhiya” (ORT) Russia
Joint 2nd Place: ORT Herzl Technology Lyceum in Kishinev
Each team approached the task in their own unique way. Odessa’s focus was on telling the story of ORT’s foundation according to historical documents which the students sourced and explained. Seven students contributed to the research and production of a short, illuminating film, which you can see on our YouTube channel.
Throughout the day, students and friends of ORT logged into our Global Masterclasses, which were online webinars featuring presentations about a variety of subjects. Each session was attended by students from different schools around the world all experiencing the same class at the same time.
Topics ranged from Comics and the Bible; Gender, Science and Bias; the Culture of Digital Society; the Magic of Computer Science; the Technology of Modern Security; and the Wisdom of the Crowd. Students had opportunities to interact with each other and with the presenters, answering and asking questions to broaden their knowledge of subjects not otherwise covered in school. Overall, seventeen ORT schools participated in the activity, with up to 100 students per session.
There was a lively atmosphere across the ORT network throughout the day and particularly during the Global Quiz. Eighteen schools joined together online from their different time zones prepped and ready to test their knowledge of ORT in history and around the world today. Teams from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Russia, Ukraine and Israel completed the quiz live using the online quiz platform ‘Kahoot!’
Congratulations to all the teams who participated, it was clear that a lot of effort had gone into studying the materials. The competition was very close with all schools performing well and giving the correct answers over 70% of the time on average. If you would like us to send you the detailed results spreadsheet for your school please be in touch. We are pleased to announce first, second and third place prizes to the following schools and we will be contacting each of them individually to arrange prizes:
1st Place – Kfar Silver Youth Village, Hof Ashqelon, Israel
2nd Place – Levinson Junior High & High School, Kiryat Yam, Israel
3rd Place – Escuela Ort Team 2, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Each school had their own approach for International ORT Day, making the event all the more dynamic and special. Some schools held assemblies, printed posters and banners, made short films and took photographs. We followed the progress of all of this activity with the social media hashtags #OpenHandsTogether and #ORTDay. It was a pleasure to see so many students and teachers getting into the spirit of the day!
The Facebook live broadcasts from St Petersburg at the ORT De Gunzburg School and from Brazil at the Instituto De Technologia ORT School were fun and illuminating glimpses into two ORT schools around the world. Students shared their International ORT Day activities as well as special performances that they had prepared such as a flash mob and a tour of their school.
Friends of ORT around the world shared over 350 photos for our special ‘Open Hands Together’ campaign, which asked students to post a creative photograph to demonstrate ORT’s belief that with a good education, the right tools and our hands together, the future is in our hands.
We were overwhelmed with the amount of beautiful photos shared and are excited to announce the winner of our mini competition on social media at the end of this week.
