City in Spain. One of the most important medieval Jewish communities in the country. In different periods great Torah scholars, poets, and political leaders were active there including Isaac and Moses ibn Ezra, Judah Halevi, members of the Abulafia families, Ahser b. Jehiel and Israel Al-Nakawa. Blood libels, persecutions and riots became the lot of Toledo Jewry, until in 1391 the Christians destroyed almost all the synagogues and many of Toledo's Jews were martyred. (15:1198)
