Uruguay Jewish Monuments
Holocaust Memorial, Montevideo
The Holocaust memorial was innaugurated on 10th November 1994 by the
former president of Uruguay Dr. Louis Alberto Lacalle. It is the only
monument of its kind in Latin America and one of few in the entire
world. It is situated in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. The
initiative to build it came from the government and was officially
endorsed by the parliament in a special bill.
The momument, seen from the Rambla Wilson area of the city, is like a
chunk of rock with a 120 meter long wall. The wall symbolizes the
Jewish people and the rupture of the Holocaust. In spite of the
rupture, the wall keeps its integrity and leads to hope, to a future.
The wall creates a visual association with the Wailing Wall.
