The Israelites were in Egyptian bondage, under the stronghold of the Pharaohs for many years. It was about 3300 years ago when Moses and his brother Aaron struggled against the Pharaohs who ruled the land, in a bid to be released from slavery and Egypt in order to go to their homeland, the Land of Israel. With Divine help, in the form of 10 plagues against the Egyptians, the Israelites were allowed to leave.
Once they had gone, Pharaoh had a change of heart and chased after them. Once again, it was with Divine intervention that the Israelites managed to escape. The seas parted to let the Jews go, but closed in again when the Egyptians attempted to come after them.
The Israelites remained in the desert for forty years, until they finally reached the promised land. It was during this period that the Torah (the Bible) was revealed to Moses, at Mount Sinai, but he was not allowed by the Lord, to enter the land of Israel.
