Chibur Project

Chibur aims to motivate young Jews in countries of the former Soviet Union, Baltic States and Eastern Europe to take an active interest in collecting and documenting their local and family histories.  Students will compile a living resource – via a dedicated website – to record, share and discuss the stories of Jewish communities, comparing and contrasting the Jewish communities of today and yesterday.

Under the guidance of their specially trained teachers, students will learn how to research their community’s Jewish history, as well as their own family’s unique journey that has led them to this particular location. Through this process, students will develop a sense of excitement about the revival of Jewish life in many of these places, and will come to appreciate the importance of preserving their heritage.
